When we attend Mass every weekend. Do we truly believe that Christ is present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity? It is a fair question to be asked. Given how we take part in the Mass every weekend. At some point things become too common and too routine. To the point that every weekend becomes a replay of some kind of the previous one. With very little to change that nature. It becomes way too easy to lose focus on what is going on because we are so use to things as they are.
A priest once said during his homily that we have “lost our sense of the supernatural.” and to an extent this is true. We have a tendency to believe what we see and reject what we can’t. Being part of the faith should mean that we, on some level, accept that their is more to the world than what we see in front of us. That some elements of life take on a more spiritual aspect.
It is easy to lose sight of what takes place during the Mass. Our attention can be easily pulled in many directions and often at the worse times. Such as during the consecration where our eyes should be fixed on our Lord but it often not. Most the time our eyes are wandering about and not even looking at altar. Part that is because once again we tend to take things for granted. That we will always have the Mass and the Eucharist. History says this is not always the case.
The other element is that we no longer have an understanding the supernatural. Unless it is right in front of us we cannot seem to understand or accept it. Hard for us to believe that simple bread and wine can become the body and blood of our Savior. We take part in the Mass but we simply no longer believe that God can do anything that powerful in this current time.
Yet history tells us differently. When you look though out the history of the church and see the many Eucharistic miracles that have happened. Moments where the host has turned into literal flesh and blood. Often times the very heart of Christ present. Elements of life that science cannot simply explain. Even today such things still happen and should get our attention.
As Catholics we really need to do better at understanding what is taking place at a supernatural level at Mass. The bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of our Savior. To understand what it means for us to take part in this. We need to have a faith and understanding that goes past what the world demands that we accept. The world has always rejected Christ by minimizing the importance of the Eucharist and rejecting the spiritual and supernatural aspect of what we believe. Which is why our focus in this world should always be on Christ. Even during the Mass.
When we attend Mass every weekend. Do we truly believe that Christ is present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity? Perhaps we should take some time to reflect on this and figure out what roadblocks we have in our lives that prevent us from fully accepting and embracing Christ. -
