Learn about our Faith
Instead of just assuming you understand us.
There are not over 100 people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church — which is, of course, quite a different thing. - Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
The Catholic church tends to be a bit of a lighting rod for those who have issues with what we believe. It is not a surprise given the history of the church as a whole. The problems that come into play are those who are not Catholic and make broad assumptions of what we believe and what we don't. Some of them are from people who have never been part of the faith. Or by those who were once part of the Church and have left for various reasons.
Some non Catholics will spend the time online trying to pick apart everything that we hold dear. Going after with a broad paint brush. When you attempt to point out the flaws in the arguments they will go on the attack saying that they know more about what we (Catholics) believe than we do. Instead of taking the time to properly understand our faith. When presented with a counter point or offer direct resources they will double down on the venom.
It comes across as a level of pride. To hold fast on to the clearly inaccurate understanding of what it means to be Catholic. More so when it comes from a narrow group that claim they use to follow the church. It is a shame that so many "Christians" do not hold Catholics in the same level as they believe. Often thinking of us as following "the other guy".
It is one thing to have a disagreement with the church. Given the entire history this is not anything new or a major surprise. However it would be nice if some would take the time to properly learn about our faith from us instead of making broad and unflattering assumptions. The Catholic church has a rich history and we have our reasons for what we do. Even if many non Catholics don't want to take the time to fully understand this. -
