Many who see my work with The Lego Church Project see it for what it is on the surface. A giant building using a children's toy. On that level is not an unfair understanding. It is a massive mini-figure scale building of my own design using LEGO. A building toy often associated with children. Yet just like most things in this world. Their is more to the story.
LEGO is enjoyed by million of people across all ages. It is a very useful medium for artists. Their is also a major adult fan base of talented builders who are doing things that I can only dream of. You see this on the various blogs dedicated to builders across the entire world. While it is fair to think that LEGO is just strictly for children. Even the company itself has released sets for the adults. For me it is a creative medium that I enjoy using. Because of everything I can do with it.
However the builds themselves tell only part of the story. What you cannot see on the surface is the level of challenge that is involved. Taking the countless hours to build and rebuild sections at a time. All from the ideas that are inside my mind. To build something of this nature free hand requires a level of visualization and planning that for me can be difficult. It is only though the memory of previous builds that I can even do this. Part of the disability that I have means that I don't learn things easily and new item can be more of a challenge than need be. Even tasks that may seem easy for some. Such as learning a new song for the choir in parts, can be a struggle for me.
Yet this something that I am willing to do. I'm showing no matter what challenge or disability you face God can still use your talents. Many who come across my work do not realize the daily challenges that I have to content with. Such as living with balance issues thanks to the cerebral palsy. All of these things have a role to play in what I do with The Project and that keeps me motivated even when I run into issues with trying to find parishes to display at.
The displays that I want to do come from a deep desire to share my talents with others. Something like this, the Lego Church Project, is not meant to be hidden in some apartment. Much like our own talents, it is meant to be shared with others. While on one hand yes I am using a building toy to make a giant building. However when you dive deeper into the bricks you realize their is indeed more to the story. -
